The lecture course "Psychiatric Power" (1973/74) reflects and substantiates Michel Foucault's shift in thought from the analysis of representations, epistemes, and institutions to the exploration of power relations that operate at all levels of society, right down to the individual body. Drawing on the early history of psychiatry, already outlined in "The History of Madness in the Classical Age," the philosopher demonstrates how disciplinary power, gradually displacing the previous sovereignty characteristic of monarchical rule, determines, on the one hand, the structure and functioning of psychiatric hospitals, the relationship between doctor and patient, and the nature of psychiatric knowledge, while also setting the epistemological vector for the development of the social sciences as a whole. By shifting the focus to power, Foucault connects historical analysis with modernity: one of the tasks he set for himself in this course was to characterize the strengths and weaknesses of resistance to psychiatric power and outline ways that could make this resistance effective.
