Asya Volodina's book Protagonist is a classic "university novel", an academic tragedy where a powerful psychological layer is woven into a nonlinear plot and an experimental form of narrative. The story of student Nikita Buyanov's suicide is told in nine voices, supplementing or destroying previous versions of events, and leaving open the question of the reasons for Nikita's decision. Each chapter is an internal monologue of a new character who, faced with the consequences of the suicide, tries to find an excuse for himself, and to understand why the ancient cult of perfection leads to human sacrifice in the struggle of the good against the best. The text rhymes with ancient tragedies at the level of frame (prologue, agonas, commos, epilogue, epigraphs) and motifs (much of the action is centered in the philosophy department of the Academy), and each character echoes the hero of the actic cycle about Orestes (Nikita is Orestes, the sister is Electra, the mother is Clytemnestra/Medea, and the dean is Agamemnon/Oedipus).
