In California's Little Saigon, a neighborhood where the Vietnamese diaspora has lived for many years, everyone knows that a curse hangs over the Duong family: women in their lineage only give birth to daughters, and each daughter bears the burden of their mother's sins. Mai Nguyen, a member of the Duong family, hasn't spoken to her sisters for years, and her three daughters refuse to even know their mother. When Mai Nguyen goes to a fortune teller to find out how to break the family curse, the fortune teller unexpectedly tells her that this year their family will have a funeral, a wedding, and the birth of a son. The events that follow turn the family's life upside down and help the Duong women find their way home and to each other.
