Economist Guido Giacomo Preparata aims to uncover the forces that brought Adolf Hitler's radical nationalist party to power in Germany in 1933 and helped him unleash World War II. Analyzing the events that followed the unexpected rise of a unified Germany in the late 19th century, he concludes that the young, ambitious state primarily challenged the might of the British Empire. A "fraternal merger" between Germany and Russia would have been Britain's true nightmare—such a geopolitical entity would inevitably have destroyed its global hegemony. To prevent such a scenario, the British ruling elite devised a plan to establish conflicting regimes in Russia and Germany. The war and the "Iron Curtain" dividing the center of Europe were the successful culmination of this plan.
