In the early days after the adoption of Prohibition in the United States, long before Al Capone's name became known to all Americans, the son of German immigrants George Remus quit his law practice and went into the whiskey trade. Two years later, he became a multimillionaire. At extravagant parties in his luxurious mansion in Cincinnati, he, along with his wife, socialite Imogene, lavishly gifted guests: diamonds - men, expensive cars - women. By mid-1921, Remus controlled 35% of the liquor trade in the United States. Assistant Attorney General Mabel Walker Willebrandt decided to overthrow the "king of bootleggers" from his throne. She dispatched her top agent, Franklin Dodge, to investigate the activities of the Remus empire. This decision had deadly consequences: Remus ended up in prison, and his wife had an affair with the slick agent. They began an intrigue against Remus that reached the highest levels of power and ended with an assassination that shook America. The story Karen Abbott tells seems unbelievable, but it is true from the first to the last word and is based entirely on historical documents.
