It's the 1960s in the American South. Skeeter has just graduated from college and is returning home to the sleepy town of Jackson, where nothing ever happens. She dreams of becoming a writer and breaking out into the big world. But a proper Southern girl shouldn't indulge in such foolish illusions; a proper girl should marry and take care of the household.

Wise Aibileen is thirty years older than Skeeter; she's been serving in white households her entire life, raised seventeen children, and has long since given up on life, heartbroken by the death of her only son.

Minnie is the best cook in all of Jackson, and also the most sassy servant in town. Her sharp tongue has already gotten her into trouble more than once. Minnie never stays in one place for long. But even the most arrogant white women are better off not messing with Minnie. Two Black maids and an inexperienced white girl share one thing: a heightened sense of justice and a desire to somehow change the status quo. Will these three be able to stand up to the world? Will they survive this struggle?

In 2011, the novel was adapted into a film, and "The Help" became one of the highlights of the 2011-2012 film season, nominated for four Oscars and receiving a warm reception. Kathryn Stockett wrote the screenplay, and Tate Taylor directed the film.
