Alexander Mosolov, a military man and diplomat, was a member of Nicholas II's inner circle. His position as Chief of the Chancellery of the Ministry of the Imperial Court was quite high in the hierarchy of the time. Mosolov observed life at court from the inside and, by virtue of his duties, actively participated in it. He enjoyed the trust of the royal family, carried out sensitive assignments, and was often invited to dinner, where informal conversations took place. An honest servant and a clever man, he knew how to keep secrets and published his memoirs only after almost none of the people he mentioned were alive. For him, the Tsar, Tsarina, and other members of the imperial family were, first and foremost, people—he respected them, but did not spare them when speaking of their shortcomings. With precise brushstrokes, revealing a literary ability unexpected for a military man, he paints their psychological portraits and accompanies his descriptions with a wealth of details: how they raised their children, what their everyday habits were, what they ate and drank, how they entertained themselves, traveled, and interacted with servants.
