Romain Gary (1914–1980) was a French classic with Russian roots. His real name is Roman Katsev, and the pseudonym Gary comes from the Russian verb “to burn”. Under his other pseudonym, Emil Azhar, he became the only winner of the second Goncourt Prize in history.
The Guilty Head is a hoaxer novel about a hoaxer. A young handsome ragman with no clan or tribe lives in a shack in Tahiti with a beautiful Tahitian and pretends to be an artist, then a leper, siphoning money from wealthy tourists. His true name is surrounded by mystery. Everyone wonders why, trying to break with civilization and escape from himself, he fled to this island, which cleverly managed to impose a “tax on Gauguin”.
