It is commonly believed that emotions and politics are a dangerous combination, peculiar only to aggressive societies. In her book, Martha Nussbaum seeks to refute this thesis and prove that any political principles need emotional support. She draws on the example of leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Jawaharlal Nehru and Martin Luther King, Jr. who were able to connect political emotions with aspirations for universal peace and justice rather than with bellicose projects directed against other nations. The author also draws on anthropological research that suggests that the tendency to build harmful hierarchies and discriminate is rooted in human nature, but proposes to counteract these tendencies by cultivating love and extended compassion, first for one's fellow citizens and then for members of other nations. The primary tools in cultivating these feelings should be various forms of public art, from poems, novels, monuments and memorials to Bollywood films. Martha Nussbaum is a philosopher and professor at the University of Chicago.
