Polina Semyonovna Zhemchuzhina was more than just V.M. Molotov's wife, nor my grandmother, although the latter is most significant for me. She herself was a more than remarkable figure in our Soviet history. A girl from the Zaporizhian steppes, a grain of sand in the storm of revolution and civil war, she rose to the heights of the Kremlin's Olympus. She effectively created the perfume industry in the USSR and developed the food industry. She was the first woman to head the Union's People's Commissariat of Production—the fishing industry. In 1949, Zhemchuzhina was arrested and sentenced under the infamous Article 58—treason, which she never betrayed for a second. She spent several years in exile, and only Stalin's death spared her, like Molotov, from almost certain death.

The author of the book is the grandson of P.S. Zhemchuzhina spent many years collecting material for a book about his grandmother, but wrote it only now, when letters thought lost by Zhemchuzhina, which largely formed the basis of this book, were discovered.
