The work of Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov is one of the most significant phenomena in Russian painting of the second half of the 19th century. Not only his art, but the artist himself, was revered by young artists. The artist's versatility knew no bounds: he was a painter and theater designer, an architect, a musician and composer, a theater and public figure, and a talented teacher—his students included I. I. Levitan, K. A. Korovin, I. S. Ostroukhov, A. E. Arkhipov, A. Ya. Golovin, and E. M. Tatevosyan. He designed productions at Mamontov's Moscow Private Opera and organized amateur theater, staging public performances and concerts. He volunteered for two wars and was one of the first to receive the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR. The book about Polenov is a profound, intelligent, and sensitive study of the life of not only an outstanding artist, but also a remarkable person, whose friendship was treasured by many representatives of Russia's creative intelligentsia.
