Nikolai Georgievich Garin-Mikhailovsky (1852-1906) was a fine writer, engineer, traveler and simply a true Russian intellectual. His book is the result of a journey through the Far East full of adventures, dangers and discoveries. This expedition became for Garin-Mikhailovsky an integral part of a round-the-world trip, during which he also visited China, Japan, the Sandwich Islands, America and France. However, with special attention, the writer studied Korea, which was previously closed to Europeans. The journey, which at first was conceived as a "reboot", a rest from the hardships of life, turned into an unusually interesting creative expedition and gave Garin-Mikhailovsky a wealth of material for vivid travel essays.
