Evgeny Babushkin (b. 1983) is the winner of the Debut and Star Ticket awards, as well as the Dmitry Gorchev Prize for short fiction, and the author of The Bible of the Poor. Critics say he has "found a language for true horror" and is "fascinated by the tragedy of existence." Babushkin, however, says he simply loves making beautiful things.
"Drunken Birds, Merry Wolves" is a collection of fairy tales, parables, and plays about modern eccentrics: they live unnoticed alongside us and within us. The backstreets of Moscow and the avenues of Berlin, lousy hotels and abandoned villages—there seems to be nothing miraculous in this world. But your neighbors can easily turn into wolves and back again, the children of former enemies will inevitably fall in love, and a fired janitor will accidentally create an entire world.
"I can sort of walk on the ground." "And I'm used to writing what I need and what helps my navigation devices work. But can I please put this book in my backpack and bag?"
Denis Osokin, writer, screenwriter
