Alexander Nikolayevich Engelhardt - a scientist, writer and public figure of the 60-70s of the XIX century - is known to the general public mainly as the author of "Letters from the Village". These are indeed detailed letters, the first of which was sent in 1872 to "Otechestvennye zapiski" from the Engelhardt family estate - the village of Batishchevo, Dorogobuzhsky uyezd, Smolensk region. And then for ten years readers of "OZ" waited for the publication of the next letter. The twelfth letter was printed already in the "Herald of Europe" - "Otechestvennye Zapiski" closed. "Letters" in its time was published as a book, which was carefully studied by Lenin and Marx, thanks to which "Letters from the village" was republished after 1917.
