The book by the outstanding Polish pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman tells about the difficult trials that befell him during the Second World War in the Warsaw Ghetto. He not only tried to survive, but also participated in the resistance to the enemy that came to his native land as best he could. However, it was the help of a German officer that later allowed him to escape.

Excerpts from the diaries of that same officer, Wilm Hosenfeld, are also included in the publication and serve as an important addition to what Szpilman writes about. The book served as the basis for the famous film directed by Roman Polanski.
