Gennady Nikolaevich Likhachev, an ornithologist and the son of Academician N. P. Likhachev, describes in his memoirs the family's life on Petrozavodskaya Street in St. Petersburg. The house built for the family, behind its simple, austere façade, concealed a unique museum of letters, founded by his father. The author's happy childhood in a large noble family, visits from friends, relatives, and unusual museum visitors, summer trips to the Sushnevo estate, his father's scientific research, and the author's own quest for a personal path, are interrupted by wars and revolutions. The comfortable family life and the father's dreams are gradually destroyed, family members disperse across the country, and many perish.
A special place in the narrative is occupied by the personality and work of Nikolai Petrovich Likhachev—an academician, a prominent specialist in source studies, diplomatic studies, sphragistics, paleography, and a collector of Russian icons, whose collections are now housed in the Russian Museum, the Hermitage, the Library of the Academy of Sciences, the Pushkin Museum, and other museums and research institutes. In 1930, Likhachev was arrested in connection with the "academic case," and his memory was erased for many years.
The publication includes commentary and illustrations.
