Sergei Mikhailovich Soloviev (1820-1879) was an outstanding Russian historian; professor at Moscow University and academician of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy. His study of Peter the Great was written in 1872, for the 200th anniversary of the first Russian emperor, and made a strong impression on the reading public.
Solovyov gave an enthusiastic, but at the same time balanced assessment of this ruler. According to the historian, Peter I was, first of all, a hard worker on the throne, a man who was able to unite the disparate national forces for a common goal - the transformation of Russia into a major European power and empire. However, being a professional historian, Solovyov described negative traits in Peter's character, primarily suspicion and cruelty. The scientist explained them by the difficult environment in which the future emperor grew up, having witnessed the bloody Streltsy rebellion and ruthless struggle for power at a young age. The book is supplemented by S.M. Solovyov's stories about the "nestlings of Peter's nest", as well as about notable episodes of Peter's reign.
