Anderson as a poet remains virtually unexplored in our scholarship. Numerous studies have been devoted to his work in foreign scholarship (primarily American scholarship), which is in keeping with his stature and influence on American writers in the 20th century. While these works extensively discuss the American writer's poetic endeavors, this aspect of his work remains largely unmentioned in Russian-language publications. Translations of his poems, as well as translations of most of Anderson's prose miniatures, written in versé form, have not yet been published in Russian.
Olga Anikina translated 49 texts from "Mid-American Chants" and three from "The Triumph of the Egg." This book of translations is part of a larger, multi-year scholarly effort devoted to studying the stylistic features of Anderson's prose. Only after gaining an understanding of Anderson's unique approach to language and rhythm, and after a thorough study of the essence of Anderson's so-called "myth," was O. Anikina able to approach a more accurate rendering not only of the images used by the American classic but also of the subtle rhythmic and musical elements of the texts. The Russian publication of "Chants of Middle America" opens a new chapter in Russian Anderson studies and fills one of the gaps in contemporary Russian American studies.
