The third volume of The Story of Middle-earth gives us a unique opportunity to look at the creation of the mythology of Middle-earth through the prism of poetic renditions of two of the most significant stories of Tolkien's world: the legends of Turin and of Lúthien. The first of the poems, the grandiose unpublished "Song of the Children of Húrin," deals with the tragedy of Turin Turambar. The second, the heartfelt "Le o Leitian," the main source of the legend of Beren and Lúthien in the Silmarillion, tells of the Quest for the Silmarils and the encounter with Morgoth in his underground fortress. The poems are accompanied by commentary on the evolution of the story of the Ancient of Days. The book also includes a curious critical dissection of "Le o Leitian" by C. S. Lewis, who read the poem in 1929.
