The third volume of The History of Middle-earth offers a unique insight into the creation of Middle-earth mythology through the lens of poetic adaptations of two of the most significant narratives in Tolkien's world: the legends of Túrin and Lúthien. The first of these poems, the grandiose unpublished "The Lay of the Children of Húrin," commemorates the tragedy of Túrin Turambar. The second, the poignant "Lay of Leithian," the primary source for the tale of Beren and Lúthien in The Silmarillion, recounts the Quest for the Silmarils and the encounter with Morgoth in his underground fortress. The poems are accompanied by commentary on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days. The book also includes a fascinating critical analysis of "The Lay of Leithian" by C.S. Lewis, who read it in 1929.
