The Second World War defined all international politics from the mid-20th to the beginning of the 21st century. Its interpretation (mainly through the image of the Great Patriotic War) became the ethical foundation of all Russian politics. Domestic perceptions of that pivotal epoch do not coincide with the assessments and views established in the historical memory of other countries. European and American narratives are quite familiar in Russia, including in the context of fierce debates at the highest political level. Non-Western interpretations have remained largely out of sight of our reading public. The cooperation between the journal Russia in Global Politics and the Center for the Study of Cultural Memory and Symbolic Politics at the European University in St. Petersburg has made it possible to prepare the first qualified review and analysis of this problematic field. The eleven chapters of the monograph are written by specialists in country studies and/or international relations, and it is from this perspective that they look at the politics of World War II memory in Japan, China, North and South Korea, Mongolia, India, Iran, Turkey, the Arab world, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Internationalists, political scientists, cultural scientists, historians and, finally, scholars of the politics of memory as an interdisciplinary field will all find much useful information and food for thought here.
