The cycle of radio conversations "Foundations of Russian Culture" (1970-1971) by the prominent churchman and theologian Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann (1921-1983) is published in its entirety for the first time. Occupying a special place in Schmemann's legacy, the radio cycle covers a large historical space, building a panorama of Russian culture from the era of the introduction of Christianity in Kievan Rus' to the 20th century. The talks are an attempt to analyze the multifaceted knots and insoluble antinomies of Russian culture that led to the tectonic social breakdowns at the beginning of the 20th century, to the "revolution as a break in the personal and national destiny" of several generations at once, to the disappearance of "pre-revolutionary Russia" as a cultural civilization, and to the tragedy of the Russian Exodus, of which Alexander Schmemann himself was a part, having been born in exile, but realizing himself to be "unconditionally Russian". The edition is accompanied by a preface by the priest's son, an introductory article on the editional history of the text and related archival and textual research, and extensive commentary. The book is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of Russian culture.
