Magical realism from Goran Petrovic. Heroes migrate from dream to reality and back again. In dreams you can travel through time, villains in dreams can rob and kill, can steal all the ideas and ideas. Even pregnancy can be hidden in a dream, though it will last three times longer than usual, but in real life no one will suspect anything.
Thirteenth century. Bulgarians and Kumans are attacking the monastery of St. Savior. With their gruesome attributes, gloominess and bloodthirstiness, they are on a par with any "army of darkness" from modern fantasy.
They have ominous shadows, and the leader Shishmana has a hat made of lynx, which comes to life and at the command of the owner rushes at the offender.
The narrative spreads throughout the history of Europe: the cunning of the legendary blind man, the Venetian Doge Dandolo, the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders, the fate of the two Serbian kings Dragutin and Milutin.
The novel even has its own Woland - a man with a dried gourd from which darkness pours out.
