"The content of my book is myself, and this is by no means a reason for you to give your leisure to a subject so frivolous and insignificant" - this is how Michel Montaigne (1533-1592) characterizes his own work. But people still find pleasure in reading his "Experiments" today. Why? Apparently, it is precisely because Montaigne himself - philosopher, intellectual, wit - is still relevant. One contemporary author called him "a typical blogger," and there is a lot of truth in this epathetic formulation. Montaigne wrote, in his own words, for loved ones, family and friends, wanting to leave "some traces" of his own character and thoughts. Thus he created a series of brilliant, humorous, candid texts, and the "audience reach" was unexpectedly wide: Michel Montaigne became a significant virtual interlocutor, advisor, and friend for many generations of readers around the world.
