"Omon Ra" is Viktor Pelevin's first novel, written in 1991. This short novel is a recommended introduction to the author's work.

This book explores the mysteries of Soviet cosmonautics and the "secret" cosmonauts. Soviet cosmonauts are being trained for a mission to the Moon. One of them, Omon Krivomazov (call sign Ra, after the Egyptian god), fervently believes in the mission of science, but he is about to discover that everything is not quite as he thought.

"Omon Ra" depicts a curious world of cruel reality, where human life resembles a tightly sealed rocket with a painted-on door, and the lunar missions turn out to be the most colossal deception in Soviet history.

The fusion of Egyptian mythology with Soviet mythology, irony as a signature technique, and the text's astonishing imagery.
