"Once Upon a Forest" is a semi-autobiographical novel by the classic Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bondopadhyay (1894–1950). It tells the story of a young man named Shottochoron from Calcutta, who, unable to find work, migrates to the neighboring state of Bihar, where he becomes the manager of a large forest tract. The more Shottochoron becomes enchanted by the beauty of the local forest, the more burdened he becomes by the task of clearing the land for cultivation. In the novel, the forest is not simply the setting for the main events but a central character, active and multifaceted, powerful and menacing, endowed with power over people and subjugating their will. "Once Upon a Forest" is published in Russian for the first time.
