Guy Debord (1931-1994) was a French art theorist, avant-garde artist, philosopher, writer and filmmaker, and founder of the Situationist International. This book presents his seminal works "The Society of the Spectacle" (1967) and "Commentaries on the Society of the Spectacle" (1988). "The Society of the Spectacle" is a metaphor for a world in which direct contact with reality has been lost: "everything that used to be experienced directly is now suspended in representation." The work is devoted to analyzing and criticizing both the Western capitalist system, the "dispersed spectacle society," and the Soviet authoritarian system, the "concentrated spectacle society." The "Commentary" presents the society of integrated spectacle, which includes both totalitarian control and the dictates of the consumer society.
