Vadim Sergeevich Shefner was a famous Soviet writer, journalist and translator, a native of Leningrad. He took an interest in writing prose, being already recognized as a poet, and this could not but be reflected in his works - written in an unusually lively language, characterized by a special imagery, simple quiet wisdom and sensitive attention to detail. The book includes the story "Clouds over the road", stories "Hot Summer", "Heiress", "Unknown Friend", "Strangerdom" and others. The story tells about an orphan boy, whose childhood was in the difficult 20-ies of XX century. On the share of Dimka fell a lot of trials - first in the house of evil and greedy distant relative, then in an orphanage. But he is not discouraged, and still loves life and believes in people: "I was a traveler on a long road ... there were ups and downs, and crossings, but there were no abysses ... still the road led far, forward". The heroes of the stories are ordinary people, adults, children and teenagers, who in their own way solve their life problems, experience losses and bitterness of parting. The author puts each of them in such circumstances, when they just need to make a decisive choice and understand themselves, to realize the origins of their feelings and actions. The light, lyrical atmosphere of Shefner's prose, vivid pictures of nature and descriptions of the characters' feelings remain in the memory for a long time.
