"The New Adventures of the Monkey King" is one of the most interesting and original works of its genre in Old China. At first glance, it is a sequel to the famous classical epic by Wu Cheng'en, but in fact, Dong Yue, who happened to live in another era of change - when the Ming dynasty fell under the onslaught of the Manchus - created a deeply innovative work: an aphoristic allegorical novel, a parable novel. Having published his small book in 1641, Dong Yue modestly titled it: "Supplement to the "Journey to the West"." This technique of "supplement", or rather, rethinking literary monuments, allowed the author to create a distance of ironic detachment, giving the work a new quality. A mirror of both classical tradition and its own turning point in time, Dong Yue's novel pays tribute to time-honored ideals - and exposes their limitations, ridiculing them and taking them to the point of absurdity. And who better to cope with such a task than the trickster hero, the inexhaustible inventive rebel Sun Wukong? And the Monkey King sets off on a strange mystical journey - to the World of the Future, through hell and heaven and the wilds of the human soul.
