Irish writer and journalist Maeve Binchy (1940–2012) achieved international fame with the publication of her first novel, Light a Candle. Binchy's books have been translated into dozens of languages and adapted into films, with a combined circulation of over 40 million copies. In 2004, she published Nights of Rain and Stars, "an irresistible summer story" (Publishers Weekly).

On a small Greek island, far from the popular tourist routes, a serene summer reigns. A small group of young people, barely acquainted with each other, gathers in a tavern on a high hill—some from the United States, others from Europe. Unlike ordinary vacationers, these travelers want to stay in Greece for an extended period, and each has their own reasons. Suddenly, before their eyes, a pleasure yacht in the bay bursts into flames. Not everyone is saved from the fire... The stunned witnesses of the tragedy don't even imagine that this event will change their lives forever...
