We do not want to retell the entire history of our country - it is simply impossible. We seek to shed light on what we consider to be a betrayal of the ideas that underpinned its historical mission - because it seems to us that there is still hope to correct these mistakes before the XNUMXst century finally comes into its own. We are deeply concerned about the course the US has taken recently. Why does our country deploy its military bases in all corners of the globe, the total number of which, according to some estimates, has exceeded one thousand? Why does the US spend more money on its military than all other countries combined? Why does our state still maintain a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons, most of which are in constant combat readiness, although, in fact, no country today poses an immediate threat to us? Why is a tiny minority of wealthy Americans allowed to have such a powerful influence on US domestic and foreign policy and the media, while the broad masses suffer from declining living standards and their voice in politics is becoming less and less heard? Why do Americans have to put up with constant surveillance, state interference in their personal affairs, violation of civil liberties and the loss of the right to privacy? It would have horrified the Founding Fathers and previous generations of Americans. Why in our country are those who are driven by greed and narrow-minded egoism ruling over those who stand up for such social values as kindness, generosity, sympathy for others, common interests and loyalty to popular ideals? And this is only a small fraction of the questions that we will ask on the pages of this book. And although we do not hope that we will be able to find answers to all of them, we will nevertheless try to present historical facts in such a way that readers can independently delve into the study of the issues that interest them. There is little good in the history of the American empire. But it is necessary to be honest and open about it if we are ever to dare the United States to undertake fundamental reforms that will allow it to play a leading role in moving humanity forward, instead of hindering its progress in every possible way.
