In this book, renowned Swiss psychologist and psychoanalyst Jeannette Fischer explores the impulses that lead to hatred and acts of hatred. Hatred of others begins with self-hatred, rooted in guilt that originates in childhood. To rid ourselves of self-hatred, we project it onto scapegoats. The scapegoat then bears the blame, and this, too, can be punished. The victim/perpetrator and guilt/innocence narrative dominates our actions and discourses; we are its prisoners. And this manifests itself not only on a personal level but also in social and political interactions. We cannot eradicate hatred by condemning it, or even hating it. Change is only possible after we break out of the vicious cycle and shed light on what led to its creation.
