Sometimes people have to endure a dog's fate, and dogs have it no better than people. The protagonist of the novel "Out of Shape," Katerina Petrovna, a merchant's daughter, is married to an official betrothed to her and, from the very first day of their marriage, realizes he married for his money. In desperation, she tries to find a better life, but where can she run?

The protagonist of the story "Polkan's Notes," a dog named Polkan, could empathize with the girl perfectly: he runs away from home because his stingy owners don't want to pay his dog tax, and gets caught up in a relationship that causes him pain, but he can't do anything about it.

As always, the book by master satirist N.A. Leykin is filled with subtle observations of contemporary society. Funny lines alternate with sad ones and vice versa, boldly exposing the vices surrounding him, ridiculing them.
