Having failed to secure a winter season engagement, the actors of Kotomtsev's small troupe are having a hard time. They are forced to wander through small provincial towns, trying to attract audiences there rather than in the capital. This audience, however, would much rather watch magicians, clowns, and trained dogs than Ostrovsky's plays (and the merchants would be offended by their ridicule). So the actors find themselves up to their necks in debt, yet they still try to stage performances in the hope of attracting sufficient revenue. As if their own problems weren't enough, a young merchant's son, captivated by the beauty of one of the actresses, tags along with them. As always with N. A. Leykin, readers are treated to the polished style of a master satirist, laughter through tears, and a wealth of fascinating everyday details and signs of the times.
