This new book, published in the Arzamas Book Series, is based on lectures from two courses: "The Real Repin" and "The Paradoxes of Valentin Serov." Art historian Galina Elshevskaya discusses the celebrated Russian artists, their teacher and student. You'll learn why the author of "Barge Haulers on the Volga" isn't a true member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers), which of Repin's contemporaries appeared in his historical paintings, and the origins of the rumors that his portraits could kill.

The second part of the book explores how Serov revived the portrait genre, why he earned a reputation as a wicked yet fashionable portraitist, capable of making clients—even the Emperor—tremble. And about which painting did Serov say, "I painted this thing, and then, no matter how hard I tried, nothing ever came of it."
