Peggy Hillcoat was eight years old when her father James, after a quarrel with his wife, took the girl from their home in London to a cabin lost in a remote forest somewhere in Germany.
After a devastating hurricane, he told his daughter that the rest of the world had been destroyed, leaving only the two of them.... The forest, the cabin and a homemade piano that makes no sound are all Peggy has now. Day after day, month after month, she and her father struggle to survive: hunting and gathering mushrooms, berries and plants in the summer, living a half-starved existence in the winter. And it seems like it will always be like this.... Nine years later, Peggy returns home to her mother. What happened in the woods? Why did she return alone and now? What will her new life be like?
