The memoirs of B. E. Raikov (1880–1966), a prominent teacher and methodologist, historian of natural science, and organizer of science, are divided into two books.

The events described include arrest, imprisonment, a concentration camp, the White Sea Canal, life in a settlement in Medvezhyegorsk, the resumption of scientific work, the Finnish and Great Patriotic Wars, evacuation with his family to Arkhangelsk, teaching and organizational work at the Arkhangelsk Pedagogical Institute, return to Leningrad, work at the A. I. Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, the 1948 VASKHNIL session and dismissal, and work at the IIET.
