Grigory Yakovlevich Baklanov is a famous writer and scriptwriter, one of the representatives of "lieutenant prose". In 1941 he volunteered for the front, fought in the infantry and artillery, participated in battles in Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Austria. His works about the war with great difficulty were published in Soviet times, and the fate of the movie "There was a month of May", filmed on his script by Marlen Khutsiev, was not easy. The reason for this is the hard and bitter episodes of the war, shown by Baklanov, which often went against the "parade" history. In his memoirs in this book, he told about his youth, his escape to the front, how the war was fought at the front, and his post-war life. There are a lot of interesting details about the events, the atmosphere of the pre-war, war and post-war time. Everything is written in beautiful language, truthfully, without concealment, with pain for the country and people.
