The venerable writer Arkady Nurov is going through a difficult time. His book was rejected for the Grand Prize, his young actress wife left him for the head director of a fashionable theater, and his ex-wife, his agent, is concerned less about his literary career than about her own well-being.
What's left to do? Give in, resign himself, take to drink... Or leave Moscow's boulevards for the outback, make new acquaintances there, and start writing—instead of the long-awaited novel—a play? Soon, the play, set aboard the Varadero-Moscow flight, seems not only more interesting to Nurov but also more real than his real life.
