It's a November Sunday in 1957. The USSR launches Sputnik 2 with their dog Laika on board, and the whole world is watching the news. The Becketts, a couple from Newark, New York, are also aware of the latest developments. But on this very day, their seemingly ordinary life begins to unravel. Virgil, the husband, takes his sons to church, then heads off to play golf with colleagues. Things get weird when Kathleen, once a promising tennis player and now a mother and housewife, refuses to go to church. She takes out an old swimsuit and heads to the pool, where she refuses to leave until evening.
