In the winter of 1664, a 60,000-strong army of King Jan II Casimir invaded Russia with his loyal Ukrainian Cossacks of the Right Bank and allied Crimean Tatars. During the entire 17th century, the Russian state had not experienced such a grandiose invasion of Polish-Lithuanian troops. The threat was so serious that even Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich was preparing to personally go on a campaign and lead the Sovereign's regiment, which he had not done since the Riga campaign in 1656.
The strategic goal of the offensive operation of the Polish-Lithuanian and Crimean Tatar troops was Moscow. The king wanted to reach the capital and force the tsar to conclude an agreement favorable to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, similar to the one signed in Deulino in 1618. The new book by I.B. Babulin is the most detailed and thorough study of the military campaign of 1663-1664, which was the final act in the struggle between Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for Ukraine in 1654-1667. This work utilizes an extensive range of archival sources, most of which are being introduced into the scientific turnover for the first time.
