The court poet and diplomat of the Medici family, Luigi Pulci (1432-1484) created for the entertainment of the ruler of Florence Lorenzo the Magnificent epic about the knights and giants “Morgant” (28 songs in octaves), which was destined to become a reference book of the era. An example of a metaphorical style, a treasure trove of folklore expressions, proverbs and parables, this poem is based on folk tales about Charlemagne and his paladins. In the center of a complex narrative in a burlesque style, replete with adventure and battles, Roland’s friendship with the bellicose but good-natured giant Morgant and the tricks of Margutt, the prototype of the heroes of later rogues’ novels.
For three centuries, "Morgant" led a rich tradition of adventurous knightly poems of the comic plan, influencing Renaissance classics, including Rabelais and Byron. The poem has been translated into Russian for the first time, in full and in size. The publication is accompanied by an article and an extensive commentary, illustrated with rare engravings of the first half of the XVI century. For a wide range of readers interested in the history of Italian literature and epic poetry in general.
