Literary struggle has lost its former specific character: the former, purely literary polemics are gone, there are no distinct journal associations, no clearly defined literary schools, no guiding criticism, and no consistent readership.

Each writer seemingly writes for himself, and literary groupings, if they exist, are formed according to some "non-literary" criteria—criteria that could be called literary and everyday.
The question of "how to write" has been replaced, or at least complicated, by another—"how to be a writer."
In other words, the problem of literature as such has been obscured by the problem of the writer.
