Fyodor Vasilyevich Chizhov (1811–1877)—a Slavophile publicist, publisher, mathematician, art historian, industrialist, "railway king," financier, and philanthropist—was also one of the first Russian Italianists, with a broad profile. In his words, "Italy shapes the soul... it gives scope to all that is divine within it... it cleanses it of all that has accumulated from the filthiness of earthly existence." In keeping with this motto, he enthusiastically studied Italian painting (primarily that of Beato Angelico), literature, and history (he was especially interested in the Venetian Republic). During his many years in Rome, Chizhov became close to Gogol and the Russian artists' community. His Italian diaries, published for the first time, are added to his essays on Italy.
