The fourth book in Karl Ove Knausgaard's monumental autobiographical series, "My Struggle," chronicles the protagonist's youth and the beginnings of his writing career.
Karl Ove is eighteen, has just graduated from high school, but has no intention of pursuing higher education. He wants to write. A multitude of ideas swirl in his head, eager to be put down on paper. But to dedicate himself to this pursuit, he needs money and free time. He takes a job as a schoolteacher in a small fishing village in northern Norway. He doesn't particularly enjoy the work, and the village atmosphere even less. However, he is surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful nature. At first, everything goes well: he writes several short stories, is respected by the local boys, and is popular with the girls. But when the polar darkness descends on the surrounding area, reducing the available space to a single village street, darkness descends upon the hero's soul. Hoping to regain his lost inspiration, he increasingly drinks with local fishermen, only to discover to his horror that he has memory lapses—the first sign of the alcoholism that destroyed his father. And at the edge of his consciousness, the seductive image of a student in love with Karl-Ove appears more and more persistently.
