"My Addiction to Dickens: A Family Chronicle. The 20th Century" is a wonderful memoir about how reading the classics and the cult of honor and kindness it fostered helped a little girl survive the trials of the Stalinist repressions.
Screenwriter and editor Nellie Morozova was born in 1924 to an intellectual family: journalist Alexander Morrison and sculptor Vera Morozova. Nellie's parents, who initially supported the ideals of the revolution, believed in building a happy future together, but in 1936, Alexander Morrison was arrested, and Nellie went from being an Octobrist to the daughter of an enemy of the people.
In this terrible time, oddly enough, Nellie's true salvation came from Dickens's books and his heroes: Esther and Pip, Mr. Pickwick, and Joe. However, the central focus of Nelly's memoirs is not on them, but on her family and friends, who managed to maintain their humanity and dignity even during the most difficult days of the Great Terror.
The publication includes the author's memoirs of E.S. Ginzburg, as well as a photographic afterword by Nelly Morozova's son, L.V. Bakhnov.
