In her book, Gail Rogers reconstructs the intercultural connections between two key modernist movements—British and Spanish—that influenced Ireland, as well as North and South America. The study focuses on transnational literary and cultural interactions: the dialogue between the journals of T.S. Eliot and José Ortega y Gasset, the influence of James Joyce's Ulysses on the Spanish intellectual community, the struggle against Spanish fascism and the critique of the British patriarchy in the work of Virginia Woolf, with the active participation of the Argentine dissident Victoria Ocampo, as well as the anti-fascist poetic associations centered around Federico García Lorca.

Based on a vast corpus of sources, Rogers demonstrates how modernists formed reformist alliances to reimagine postwar Europe not in the traditional centers of London, Paris, and Berlin, but in the alternative space of Madrid.
