The life of Metropolitan Nestor (1885-1962) has only emerged from obscurity in recent decades. This is largely due to the peculiarities of his biography: in 1920, due to political circumstances and his own convictions, he emigrated from Russia, living in Japan and China under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Reunification with the Moscow Patriarchate only took place in 1945, but his arrival on his native soil was not immediate, and not at all as he had imagined. Political opposition to the newly established government during the October Revolution, the Civil War, and the turbulent years of exile resulted in his being accused of "active hostile activity against the USSR" and sentenced to 10 years in a forced labor camp.
Nestor's place in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church is primarily as a Kamchatka missionary, and he himself considered his "Kamchatka period" (1907-1920) the most important in his church service. Therefore, the author devotes primary attention to this period, drawing extensively on Nestor's "Memoirs" and his other works published in the Russian Empire and abroad, as well as historical memoirs and scholarly research, secular and church newspapers and magazines covering the history of Kamchatka in the early 20th century.
The life and work of Metropolitan Nestor are not only the history of the Russian Orthodox Church but also the history of our Fatherland, and the story of this hero is told against the backdrop of the major national and political events that befell him during his long life.
