In the languid summer of 1977, a naive young young lady named Calista steams out of Athens and into the big world. She heads to an island turned movie set to work for famed Hollywood director Billy Wilder, whose films she has never seen. A world of movie divas, ironic men, champagne and strange relationships. Calista rejoices in her adventure, while Mr. Wilder himself is sad - the great director is aware that his time in the movies is coming to an end. In Hollywood, the classic is already shunned, and his new movie he shoots on German money. Calista becomes a guide for the great director into the dark labyrinth of his personal history, rooted in German soil.
Coe has a special relationship with the great Billy Wilder. Thus, his novel "The House of Sleep" directly refers to Wilder's last film "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes": the book is set in the gothic mansion Ashdown, but it is also the pseudonym of Holmes, who pretends to be married in Wilder's movie, and one of the characters in "The House of Sleep", cinephile Terry, makes sarcastic remarks about Wilder's films. Coe's new novel is a subtle story of growing up, a very intimate portrait of one of the most enigmatic and important people in the history of cinema, and, of course, an immersion in an illusory world on the edge of reality and celluloid fantasy, between dream and reality.
