Marnie, who lost her unborn child to her husband's beatings, took in an Australian magpie chick that had fallen from its nest, nursed it back to health, and named it Tamagotchi. Tamagotchi's flock is now no longer a group of free-spirited magpies led by a stern father, but Marnie and her husband, Rob, a farmer and the best lumberjack in the area (who, incidentally, despises magpies). He sings not the two-part songs of his fellow magpies, but repeats human phrases. Marnie posts Tamagotchi's "performances" online, and the bird's fame grows—he already has tens of thousands of subscribers. With the farm struggling, Marnie, on her sister's advice, decides to monetize Tamagotchi's talent. Things improve, but the jealous Rob tries to control his wife, insulting and beating her. Things take a turn for the worse after the lumberjack competition, and only Tama manages to find a way out, albeit not the best one...

Incidentally, this entire profound, poetic, sometimes comical, and very true story is told by him—a magpie-haired gentleman in a smart black tailcoat with a white shirtfront.
